Clock speed, power shards and power use
Every machine runs at 100% until you change its clock speed. Turning it down, as far as 1%, slows it and saves power. Turning it up past 100% takes power shards: one for each 50% on top, so three shards reach 250%. Overclocking is unlocked by the Overclock Production research in the MAM.
Power doesn’t grow in step with speed. It follows the clock to the power of 1.32, so a machine at 250% makes 2.5 times as much for about 3.4 times the power. The other way round, two machines at 50% make as much as one at 100% for about 80% of the power. Underclocking saves power; overclocking saves buildings and floor space.
Extractors take shards the same way, which is how a Miner Mk.3 on a pure node reaches 1,200 ore a minute. Generators are different: their output and their fuel use both go up in a straight line with the clock.
